About Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands, located on the coastline of the North Sea. This city has origins tracing back to the 12th century, thus having hundreds of years worth of history to see in the city. There are ample museums, attractions, and events to visit in Amsterdam. The city nightlife and cuisine is excellent as well. The city is lined with canals that go along the streets and is filled with both modern and classical architcture. Amsterdam is truly a sight to behold.
Location
Amsterdam is located along the coast of the Netherlands in a bay connecting to the North Sea. It is located on incredibly flat and low land filled with canals.
How to Get There
- Air transportation: Book a flight to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), which is located 9 km (5.6 mi) to the southwest of Amsterdam. From there, take a train, located at the airport, to Amsterdam. You can also ride a bus from the airport to Amsterdam as well.
- Ground Transportation: If you live in a neighboring country or town, then transport to Amsterdam Centraal station can be achieved via Thalys, Sprinter, Nachtnet, IC, ICE, CNL, or DB trains. Bus transport is also available. Car transport is possible as well.
Local Transportation
Local transportation is managed by the GVB (Gemeentelijk Vervoerbedrijf), which offers metro, tram, ferry, bus, and light rail services. Tickets can be purchased at or near every station.
